Community involvement has always been important to Dr. Monnica Williams.
She developed the original BrainPhysics OCD website which provides information about OCD, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and OC spectrum disorders to the online community. Dr. Williams helps to moderate the NeuroticPlanet OCD discussion forum for peer education and support. She is also a member of the International Society for Mental Health Online.
Mental Health Advocacy
Dr. Williams has been involved with community mental health organizations for the past ten years. This began with her work on the board of directors of the OC & Spectrum Disorders Association (formerly OC Foundation of California), where she served as director of community education.
Dr. Williams also worked with the California National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) to produce a documentary about OCD that appeared on PBS.
She is currently involved with the OC Foundation, a non-profit entity committed to the education, support, research and legislation affecting individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder and related disorders. See her recent article in the OCF Philadelphia's newsletter, the G.O.A.L. Post.
She currently serves on the board of directors of the local NAMI chapter on the Main Line.
Women's Issues
Dr. Williams has helped to develop and consulted for several sex education websites, including Epigee Women's Health, which has had several million visitors to date and is featured in the top search engines, STDs in Color, and ContraceptINFO. She is a member of the Cervical Barriers Advancement Society because she feels that women need more non-hormonal contraceptive choices.
For the past ten years Dr. Williams has volunteered with several pregnancy help organizations, including The Pregnancy Centers of Central Virginia and the Westside Pregnancy Resource Center in Los Angeles, a non-profit women's clinic.
She has also served on the board of directors of the Brookline Women's Shelter in Massachusetts.
Dr. Williams gives talks about contraception and unplanned pregnancy. Past lectures have been at the University of Oregon and area high schools. Most recently she has begun working with the new Hope Center, a pregnancy and sexual wellness clinic being developed by the People-for-People Organization to reach the underserved areas of Philadelphia.
